Hilary Duff announced Tuesday that she is returning to music after a 10-year hiatus, signing with Atlantic Records for her first album since 2015’s "Breathe In. Breathe Out." The 37-year-old actress and singer also said a docuseries documenting her musical comeback and personal life is in the works.
The press release, cited by Variety, said the docuseries will chronicle Duff’s "long-awaited musical return and personal journey," offering "an unfiltered vignette into Hilary’s world." It added that viewers will see Duff balancing family life with recording new music, rehearsing live shows and preparing to perform on stage for the first time in over a decade. The series does not yet have a title or release date.
The project will reportedly be helmed by Sam Wrench, who directed the concert film for Taylor Swift’s "The Eras Tour" and directed Sabrina Carpenter’s Netflix special "A Nonsense Christmas." Duff teased the announcement on Instagram with a short caption, "New music … or something," alongside three photos from inside a recording studio. Fans responded quickly on social media, expressing excitement and congratulating the former Disney Channel star.
Duff rose to prominence in the early 2000s with roles on Disney Channel and in films, and she built a parallel pop career with hits such as "So Yesterday." Her last full-length studio album, "Breathe In. Breathe Out.," was released in June 2015. The new deal with Atlantic marks her first major-label partnership for recorded music since then.
In interviews over the past several years Duff has spoken about the challenges of balancing motherhood and a creative career. In a December 2023 interview with Access Hollywood she said being "so immersed in motherhood" made it easier to take acting jobs with predictable schedules rather than pursue music, though she also said she always expected she would return to music one day. Duff shares son Luca, 13, with ex-husband Mike Comrie, and daughters Banks, 6, Mae, 4, and son Townes, 16 months, with her husband Matthew Koma, whom she married in 2019.
Duff's live-performance history includes arena dates and international appearances in the 2000s; the press release emphasized that the docuseries will show preparations for live performance, including rehearsals and the build-up to returning to the stage.
Details about the album—such as a release date, single rollout or collaborators—were not disclosed. Duff’s representatives had not provided additional comment by the time of the announcement. The docuseries’ platform and production timeline also remain unannounced.
Duff’s return to recording follows a period in which she focused on acting, family and other projects, including the Hulu series "How I Met Your Father" and the film "Cheaper by the Dozen." The announcement positions her to re-enter pop music while offering audiences a behind-the-scenes look at the practical and personal aspects of staging a comeback.
