The third season finale of HBO's "House of the Dragon" concluded with the dramatic death of Helaena Targaryen. The character, played by Phia Saban, took her own life by jumping from a window in the Red Keep, a move she perceived as the only escape from her captivity under Queen Rhaenyra.

The episode depicted Queen Rhaenyra, portrayed by Emma D'Arcy, discovering Helaena's suicide. Helaena's deepening depression, exacerbated by her separation from her daughter Jaehaera, had been a prominent theme throughout the season.

Before her death, Helaena left behind a completed tapestry for Rhaenyra. The embroidery depicted Rhaenyra on the Iron Throne, surrounded by dragon fire with blood streaming from her crown.

Saban, reflecting on the scene, described it as a "tragedy" and a culmination of Helaena's story arc. She noted Helaena's feelings of her body and unborn child being "forsaken" and her desire to protect her existing children. "She doesn’t want to live the way she’s living anymore, and she feels that she wants to protect the children that she does have. She’s just trying her best," Saban told Variety.

Fans expressed their emotional responses on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Many described the scene as heartbreaking, with some noting that while Rhaenyra's actions may have contributed to Helaena's distress, her death was not entirely Rhaenyra's fault. Other comments highlighted Helaena's innocence and her struggle within a family that did not understand her, with some fans suggesting she was finally free from her perceived prison.

The season finale also featured the Battle of Tumbleton. During this conflict, Ormund Hightower, played by James Norton, was killed by a dragon. Roderick Dustin (Tommy Flanagan) met his end engulfed in dragonfire after wounding Hightower. The fate of Kat (Ellora Torchia) was not explicitly shown, but Hugh was seen reacting in anguish upon finding her body.
