HBO has set release months for two series in the Game of Thrones franchise, announcing that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will arrive in January 2026 and that House of the Dragon will return for its third season in June 2026.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which producers say is currently in post-production, was previously scheduled to premiere later in 2025 but insiders attributed the delay to additional shooting and extensive visual-effects work. House of the Dragon, which debuted in 2022, will follow in June, marking the first time HBO will release two series set in George R.R. Martin’s fictional Seven Kingdoms in the same calendar year.
The upcoming spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms features a principal cast that includes Matt Smith, Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke. Officials say post-production work includes the franchise’s signature visual effects, which have contributed to lengthy gaps between past installments because of the scale of creature animation and large-scale battle sequences.
Fans responded quickly on X, with posts celebrating the prospect of multiple Thrones projects in 2026. Some users described the announcement as a return to form for the franchise and expressed enthusiasm for a year that will include two Westeros-set series.
The renewed production push comes amid wider franchise activity. Last year reports indicated Warner Bros. was exploring at least one theatrical film set in Martin’s world, though that project was described as being in early development without a director, cast or script. Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss previously considered a theatrical trilogy when conceiving the conclusion to the original television series, and Martin has publicly discussed the possibility of film adaptations in the past. HBO has also staged special theatrical screenings of select episodes of the original series.
Not every proposed continuation has advanced. In April, actor Kit Harington confirmed that a proposed spin-off sequel focused on his Game of Thrones character had been shelved. Harington said the project had been in development but ultimately was not pursued by the network.
HBO’s slate for 2026 will test the studio’s ability to manage overlapping production schedules for effects-heavy fantasy series. The network has adjusted timelines in the past in response to reshoots, post-production demands and the logistics of coordinating large casts and visual-effects vendors. Both A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon will be available on HBO platforms when their respective premieres occur in January and June 2026.
