Hayden Panettiere detailed her profound struggles with postpartum depression and substance abuse in her 2026 memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning." The actress, known for her roles in "Heroes" and "Nashville," passed away in August 2026 at the age of 36.
Panettiere gave birth to her daughter, Kaya, with former boxer Wladimir Klitschko in December 2014. In her memoir, she described the birth as a "traumatic" ordeal that involved 14 hours of labor, a three-hour surgery following a C-section, and seven blood transfusions. Following this experience, Panettiere wrote that she felt a disconnect upon first meeting her baby, describing it as an "insurmountable task" to bond with her.
In the weeks after Kaya's birth, Panettiere turned to alcohol, consuming a bottle of wine nightly and starting her mornings with alcohol. She wrote that her first thought upon waking was of drinking, not her child or her career, indicating a need for alcohol to function by 6 a.m.
At four months postpartum, between seasons three and four of "Nashville," Panettiere entered a treatment facility, leaving her daughter with her father. She described the facility as expensive and focused on one-on-one care, but noted that its distance from everyday life prevented her from gaining perspective. Although she left the facility sober, she felt there was "no solution to my postpartum depression" and struggled with denial about alcohol's impact on her life.
By 2015, as filming for season four of "Nashville" began, Panettiere started using prescription medication to manage anxiety and insomnia. She explained that the prescribed medications had a difficult catch-22: not taking them resulted in sleeplessness, while taking them led to excessive sleeping. This led to a cycle where she entered rehab addicted to one substance and emerged dependent on another.
Panettiere later entered a second treatment facility in Europe. During this time, "Nashville" producers temporarily wrote her character out of the show, and Neutrogena canceled her long-standing contract. It was during this period that she finally identified her condition as postpartum depression. She realized that despite having a successful career, a child, friends, and a fiancé, she remained unhappy. "I had postpartum depression, and it sucked," she wrote, expressing a strong desire to regain happiness but feeling lost.
Authorities found Panettiere deceased in a Greenville, South Carolina, residence on August 16, 2026. Foul play was not suspected, and a cause of death has not yet been released. The day prior to her death, she had traveled from Los Angeles to South Carolina with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson.
Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, who has resided in Ukraine with her father since 2018. Her father, Skip Panettiere, released a statement remembering her as an "incredible light" and expressing the family's need for privacy during their time of grief.
