Harry Styles called on his 80,000 concert-goers at Wembley Stadium to "look after each other" as Britain experienced soaring temperatures on Tuesday night. The UK is facing a severe heatwave, with the Health Security Agency issuing a red health alert warning of a "risk to life" for the general population.
Temperatures in Wembley were forecast to reach 33C (91.4F) when the stadium doors opened at 5 p.m., remaining around 31C (87.8F) when Styles took the stage at 8:05 p.m. "We're going to look after each other, please try and stay hydrated. If you need anything at any point, please let me know, we can stop at anytime," Styles told the audience. "It's all good. We're gonna look after each other, have fun, dance, get sweaty, sing, scream if you wanna go faster."
Wembley Stadium adjusted its policy for the event, allowing attendees to bring metal or hard plastic water bottles inside. Half-priced water was also available for purchase, and free sunscreen was offered at information points. Videos from the stadium showed water mist being sprayed over the crowd before the concert began.
The heatwave is intensifying across Europe, with the UK bracing for potential record-breaking temperatures. A red weather warning has been issued for Wednesday and Thursday, with forecasts suggesting temperatures could approach the UK's all-time record of 40.3C (104.5F) set in July 2022. The Met Office has warned of "severe and significant impacts" and widespread health risks.
As a result of the extreme heat, some schools have canceled trips, and the Army has called off ceremonial operations in London and Windsor to prioritize the well-being of its soldiers. Lidos are reportedly fully booked. Travel disruptions are also anticipated, with train services in Kent and southeast London expected to be affected, leading rail operators to advise passengers to travel only if "absolutely necessary."
On Tuesday, the highest temperature recorded in the UK was 34.6C (94.3F) in Wisley, Surrey. Scotland and Northern Ireland also recorded their hottest days of the year so far, with temperatures reaching 28.8C (83.8F) in Aberdeenshire and 26.4C (79.5F) in County Down, respectively.
Analysis of Styles' concert setlist and fan activity suggests that the physical exertion during his performances, combined with the current heatwave, approaches the intensity of a HYROX fitness event. By the halfway point of his shows, the energy output is estimated to be equivalent to running a 10K in 60 minutes.
Styles, known for his love of running, was reportedly seen running 10km from his home to Wembley Stadium for a concert on Friday. He has previously completed marathons, including the Tokyo Marathon in 2023 with a time of 3:24:07 and the Berlin Marathon in under three hours. In a March interview with Runner's World, Styles described running as a way to find solitude and process his experiences away from the pressures of fame.
