Harry Styles addressed fan concerns about his potential retirement during a recent Madison Square Garden concert, clarifying a cryptic email that had fueled speculation. The 32-year-old singer told the audience that his intention was to be transparent about his current life stage.
"I sort of just want to be honest about who I am and where I am in my life," Styles explained during the ninth night of his New York residency. He elaborated that he did not want to end his current tour with a simple "until next time" without being more open with his fans. Styles stated that experiences over the past few years have shifted his perspective, leading him to learn contentment with what he has.
"I don't ever want these moments to ever feel less special because once they're done, they're sort of on to the next thing," he said, emphasizing his appreciation for the current tour. "These shows have been the joy of my life, they're so incredibly special to me."
The singer had previously sent an email to fans stating, "After that, I don't know what comes next for me, but l know that I’m excited to find out." This remark, coupled with the announcement of additional 2027 dates for his "Together, Together" tour, led some fans to believe his career might be winding down after the extended run.
Styles assured his audience that he was not trying to be dramatic and simply wanted to communicate openly, like speaking to friends. "I love you, and I wanted to speak to you like I would speak to my friends about this," he said, before dedicating the song "Carla's Song" to the crowd.
His current MSG residency, which began on August 26, is scheduled to conclude on October 31. Following the New York dates, Styles is set to perform in Australia, with four shows in Melbourne and two in Sydney concluding the tour. The announcement of adding 2027 dates, which Styles admitted felt "daunting" at first, extends the tour beyond its initially planned conclusion.
The singer's email also mentioned that the upcoming announcements would be for the "final cities of Together, Together." Fans reacted strongly online to the email, with many expressing a mix of excitement for new dates and anxiety over his comments about an uncertain future.
Styles, who has been in the music industry since he was 16, also made a lighthearted comment during the concert about Taylor Swift's recent wedding at Madison Square Garden, referencing that the venue also hosts weddings. Styles and Swift had a brief relationship in late 2012 and early 2013.
