Hannah Einbinder won her first Emmy Sunday, taking home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and using her acceptance speech to call, among other things, to "free Palestine."
On stage, Einbinder concluded her remarks with: "Go Birds, f--k ICE, and free Palestine." The live stream airing on CBS bleeped her voice when she said the profanity. The actor won for her breakout role on the HBO series Hacks, where she plays a young comedy writer responsible for updating material for a veteran stand-up comedian played by Jean Smart.
Einbinder's win came later in a night that also saw Jean Smart win her fourth Emmy for her role as Deborah Vance in Hacks. Einbinder has received four Emmy nominations and three Golden Globe nominations for the part.
Earlier on the Emmys red carpet, Einbinder told E! that Hacks will conclude with its upcoming season. "We’re going to start [filming] next week, and knowing it’s the last season is really bittersweet," she said. "But I think it’s right, you know? It’s nice to do something as many times as it should be done. Not overstay your welcome. Rip it and do it and laugh and cry."
Hacks, created by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky, has drawn acclaim for its portrayal of a generational partnership between a veteran comic and a younger writer, blending workplace comedy with character-driven drama. The series earned multiple nominations and wins during the television awards season, with Smart and Einbinder among its most recognized performers.
Einbinder's acceptance remarks, which combined a sports chant and political language, were delivered during the live broadcast and drew attention because part of the comment was censored on the CBS stream. Broadcasters typically mute or bleep expletives during live telecasts to comply with network standards.
Her Emmy marks a milestone in a career built on television and stand-up work and underscores Hacks's impact on awards voters as it prepares for a final season. The show’s creative team and cast have said they planned to conclude the story on their own terms, and Sunday’s announcements and comments from the red carpet confirmed that the next season will be its last.
