Singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams has spoken candidly about her teenage years, describing herself as a "naughty" and "attention-seeking" individual for whom she still feels guilt. In an appearance on the "Table Manners" podcast, Abrams, daughter of filmmaker J.J. Abrams and producer Katie McGrath, discussed the inspiration behind her new album's title track, "Daughter From Hell."
Abrams, the middle child of three, reflected on her past behavior, stating that she recognizes she was a "difficult" child. She views the title track as both an apology and a thank you to her mother, acknowledging the patience her parents showed throughout her upbringing. "I felt like I was quite difficult and I know I was difficult," Abrams said. "And I think as I grow up and just have more perspective generally, but also more love for everyone in my life and more concern as a result for everyone in my life, I think about how heinous it must have been for my parents."
She explained that her desire for attention sometimes led her to seek it in "places that were not always, you know, like smart or safe," describing her approach as often involving "sneak[ing] around."
Abrams, who has earned two Grammy nominations and opened for artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift, also addressed the "nepo baby" label. She acknowledged the privilege afforded by her family's wealth and connections, which provided her with a "safety net" that allowed her the freedom to experiment and dedicate time to her music without financial fear. "I wasn't growing up afraid financially, and that's the biggest deal," she stated. Her father, J.J. Abrams, is estimated to be worth around $300 million, known for his work on series like "Alias" and "Lost," and films such as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Her mother, an entertainment executive, is estimated to have a personal fortune between $30 million and $60 million.
Beyond financial advantages, Abrams noted the value of the "vocabulary" and creative environment she grew up with. She understands the internet discourse surrounding nepotism and acknowledges the "privilege there."
The album title "Daughter From Hell" reflects her evolving relationship with her mother. Abrams described adolescence as a challenging period for both children and parents, but emphasized that she and her mother have developed a strong bond, with Abrams calling her mother "my favorite person."
Abrams also shared details about her relationship with actor Paul Mescal, with whom she has collaborated on a song titled "Imaginary Friend" for the upcoming album. The couple, who have been linked since 2024, made their red carpet debut in 2026. Abrams described the songwriting process with Mescal as "relaxed and organic," taking place in a "creative home" where sharing is encouraged. "It's such a simple, short song and it was really just us f---ing around," she said of the track.
