Singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams has addressed the "nepo baby" label, acknowledging the privilege she has experienced due to her parents' prominent roles in the entertainment industry. Abrams, 26, is the daughter of acclaimed filmmaker J.J. Abrams and producer Katie McGrath.

In an interview on The New York Times podcast, Abrams stated, "I get it hardcore." She further elaborated on the discourse surrounding "nepo babies," saying, "I think about the privilege there. I had a safety net and that allowed me the ability to experiment and concentrate and I had the gift of time to dedicate to doing this thing I loved. I wasn't growing up afraid financially and that's the biggest deal."

Abrams pointed to her upbringing within a household steeped in the entertainment industry, noting, "There is just this vocabulary that I was so lucky to grow up with so when I see people pointing that out, it's like I get it hardcore." She also expressed understanding for online reactions, adding, "The jokes and things, I also understand. You know, like go crazy, I understand the tone of the internet."

She shared her gratitude for her current position, stating, "I feel very lucky doing what I'm lucky enough to do today. I feel support when I'm playing a show, or when I'm with my friends." Abrams also reflected on the nature of online criticism, suggesting that those who engage in such commentary may lack support elsewhere in their lives.

J.J. Abrams is known for directing and producing major film franchises including "Star Trek" and "Star Wars," with his films grossing over $4 billion worldwide. His directorial credits include "Armageddon," "Cloverfield," "Star Trek" (2009), "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015), and "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" (2019).

Abrams previously acknowledged her good fortune in 2024, explaining that while she grew up with an understanding of the entertainment world, she kept her parents at a distance from her music career. "Songwriting, for me, was always just a personal outlet to deal with my experiences without having to talk to anyone, especially my parents for many years," she told iHeart Radio.

Abrams is currently in a relationship with Irish actor Paul Mescal. The couple reportedly moved in together in London late last year, where Abrams has been focusing on writing and recording new music.
