The Qatar Goodwood Festival, known affectionately as 'Glorious Goodwood,' commenced its five-day run with a dazzling display of fashion on its opening day. Racegoers at the Goodwood Racecourse in Chichester embraced the sunny weather, arriving in a spectrum of bold colors, floral prints, and statement headgear, setting a stylish tone for one of the British flat racing season's premier events.
Each enclosure at the historic racecourse features distinct dress codes. In the exclusive Richmond Enclosure, gentlemen are required to wear a jacket and tie, while women are encouraged to adopt a 'garden party look,' featuring floaty or floral dresses, or elegant top and trouser or skirt combinations suitable for summer. Attendees are also advised against wearing stilettos due to the uneven terrain.
The Gordon and Lennox Enclosures offer more relaxed guidelines, with guests in the Gordon Enclosure encouraged to wear smart, elegant attire, and those in the Lennox Enclosure simply advised to dress appropriately for an afternoon of racing.
Among the notable attendees on the first day were former Love Island star Gemma Owen, who sported a navy ensemble, and her father, former footballer Michael Owen. Influencer Lydia Millen was also seen among the arrivals, opting for a neutral palette.
The weather on the opening day offered a stark contrast to the previous year, when torrential rain and gales disrupted the event. This year, attendees enjoyed warm temperatures, with the UK experiencing a continued summer heatwave. The festival is set to feature 13 Group contests, including three Group 1 races, headlined by the £1.5 million Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes, underscoring its status as a highlight of the flat racing calendar.
Beyond the racing, the festival offers a range of amenities, including dining experiences and food collections, along with the traditional offering of strawberries and cream. The event is known for attracting top equine athletes from around the world, alongside its glamorous attendees.
