Actress Gillian Anderson described feeling "betrayed" following allegations that emerged regarding "The Salt Path," a film in which she stars. The controversy, which arose around the film's United Kingdom release, has cast a shadow over its upcoming distribution in the United States.
"The Salt Path" is slated for release in the U.S. next month by Rialto Distribution. Anderson, who plays the character of Win in the film, and Jason Isaacs, who portrays Moth, have addressed the controversy for the first time in recent interviews.
Speaking with The Times, Anderson expressed her disappointment, noting that she and Isaacs had spent time with the individuals upon whom the film is based, Raynor and Moth Winn. "We had been so surprised by its success: 'What, really, this film about two old people going on a walk?' It felt like such a betrayal because we'd spent time with [the Winns]," Anderson told the newspaper. The Times reported that Anderson had not heard from the Winns since the allegations surfaced.
Anderson further elaborated to Radio Times that the situation was "very unfortunate," especially as the film was performing exceptionally well in the UK, exceeding her expectations. "I think we were about to sign with Sony Classics for the United States the week when the article came out, so it sucked, and continues to suck," she stated.
Despite the controversy, Anderson expressed hope that audiences would be able to engage with the film as an independent work. The film's narrative centers on Raynor Winn's memoir of the same name, which chronicles her and her husband's journey walking the 630-mile coastal path of Britain after losing their home and livelihoods.
