Gemma Chan on "Crazy Rich Asians" Sequel, New Film, and Travel Secrets
The actress discusses potential follow-ups to the hit film, her role in "Josephine," and her essential travel tips.
Gemma Chan, known for her role as Astrid in "Crazy Rich Asians," is hopeful for a sequel to the popular film. "I'm crossing my fingers; I want it to happen as much as everyone else," Chan stated in a recent interview. She highlighted the rich source material available in Kevin Kwan's novels, noting that Astrid's character arc has significant potential for further exploration.
Chan's latest project, the independent drama "Josephine," is generating awards buzz ahead of its November theatrical release. She described the film as one of the most special projects she has encountered. The script, which she first read in 2019, faced production hurdles due to the pandemic and strikes, but Chan remained committed to it. The film's journey culminated in a premiere at Sundance, where the audience's reaction exceeded her expectations. "Josephine," which stars Chan and Channing Tatum as parents to an 8-year-old girl who witnesses a crime, is directed by Beth de Araújo.
In addition to her film work, Chan recently co-hosted a New York Fashion Week dinner with Bloomingdale’s and Cultured magazine, celebrating her cover feature for the publication. When discussing her fashion choices, Chan recalled a neon pink Valentino gown worn to the 2019 Oscars as a personal favorite, praising its comfort and the inclusion of pockets. She also mentioned a Calvin Klein dress worn for a "Five-Star Weekend" screening in London as a more recent standout.
Chan has collaborated with stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray for nearly a decade. She described their working relationship as one of sync, where they can easily exchange ideas and explore different fashion risks for events. "She doesn't miss a trick. She's got her eye on everything, and she also prepares really early," Chan said of Corbin-Murray.
Chan also shared her essential travel tips, emphasizing the importance of comfort and preparedness. She always brings her own Yorkshire Tea bags from the UK and finds an exfoliating product called Sapphire Dust effective for maintaining glowing skin. For flights, she recommends comfortable compression socks to prevent leg and foot fatigue. "Good headphones, a good book, and snacks. There's nothing worse than not having snacks!" she added, listing British crisps and chocolate as favorites.
Chan's upcoming film, "Josephine," is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on November 20. She also starred in Marvel's "The Eternals" and the Peacock series "The Five-Star Weekend."
