Gary Lineker's new game show, "The Box," has been met with a highly critical review, with one commentator describing it as "moronic, infantile, dull" and potentially the "worst game show in TV history."
The program, which aired on ITV, features ten celebrity contestants undertaking a series of challenges. The format, as reviewed by Christopher Stevens for the Daily Mail, involves contestants starting inside yellow wardrobes on the back of trucks. Challenges include a treasure hunt on a building site to find yellow plywood, an egg-and-spoon race, and a game of rock, paper, scissors.
Stevens criticized Lineker's presenting role, stating he offered "vague instructions through a megaphone" with "no jokes, no patter, no personality and no reason to be there." The review suggested that even Phillip Schofield, known for his long tenure on "This Morning," might have improved the show by at least appearing engaged.
Former Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow was among the celebrity contestants. The review noted Bercow's participation and recalled his signature "Order!" exclamation from his time in Parliament. Other contestants included Joey Essex, whose appearance was also mentioned.
The review expressed a sense of bewilderment and disappointment with the show's concept and execution, describing it as "spectacularly ill-conceived, tasteless, moronic, dull and infantile."
