Allie Colleen, daughter of country music star Garth Brooks, is facing criticism for her tribute to the late Dolly Parton. Colleen posted on Instagram mourning Parton's death, but many social media users took issue with how she centered the tribute on her own relationship with her father.
Colleen, a singer-songwriter herself, began her post by reflecting on her personal fears. "My greatest fear in life is the day my Dad loses his life and I have to see the world mourn a man they never knew the way I knew him," she wrote. She offered condolences to Parton's "personal family and friends" and called grieving a "beautiful privilege."
However, the focus on her father led to negative reactions. One critic called the post "the weirdest condolence post I have ever seen. It’s giving how can I make something not about myself, about me. This is nepo baby at its worst." Another user commented, "An utterly ridiculous comment to make. This is not about you or your father."
Some commenters questioned Colleen's implication that others could not understand the grief experienced by a celebrity's loved ones. Colleen responded to these criticisms, stating, "I don’t think you will.. I would never relate to you losing your father – I don’t know how you would relate to mine. Kind of exactly what I am talking about 💜." She later clarified that she was not attempting to diminish others' grief but expected similar respect regarding her own potential future experiences.
Colleen is one of Brooks' three daughters from his first marriage to Sandy Mahl. She released her debut album, "Stones," in 2021, following a career in country music. Mackenzie Lynn Adkins, daughter of country singer Trace Adkins, offered support to Colleen, commenting that she understood the fear Colleen expressed. Parton, a celebrated singer and songwriter, died at age 80 after a battle with cancer.
