FX has released the first trailer for "The Shards," the upcoming adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's novel. The series is set to premiere on August 5, with two episodes airing at 9 p.m. ET on FX and streaming on Hulu. New episodes will follow weekly.
"The Shards" is described as a sexy and scary look at a group of teenagers in 1981 Los Angeles. The story centers on young Bret (Igby Rigney), an aspiring writer attending a prestigious prep school. His life takes a turn with the arrival of a charismatic new student, Robert Mallory (Homer Gere). Bret becomes suspicious of Robert, developing a theory that he is secretly "the Trawler," a serial killer targeting girls in the city.
The cast also includes Kaia Gerber, Hayes Warner, and Graham Campbell as Bret's friends Susan Reynolds, Debbie Schaffer, and Thom Wright, respectively. Wes Bentley and Evan Rachel Wood portray Debbie's parents, Terry and Liz Schaffer.
The series is based on Ellis's metafictional "memoir" of the same name. While the novel incorporates elements of Ellis's own high school experiences, including partying and teen drama, the storyline involving the Trawler is fictional.
"The Shards" joins FX's lineup of recent series, with viewing options available on both the FX cable channel and the Hulu streaming platform. Hulu offers subscription plans starting at $10.99 per month for ad-supported service, with an ad-free option at $18.99 per month. Disney+ bundles that include Hulu are also available.
