The search for the next actor to portray James Bond is reportedly nearing its conclusion, with speculation intensifying about who will fill the iconic role. Former Bond girl Alison Papworth expressed her hope that the next 007 will be a man, emphasizing a desire to remain true to the original literary creation.
"If they’re true to the books, I hope it’s a man," Papworth told Fox News Digital. "A man, just a man. Yes, I think it would be very strange if it were a woman. Don’t you? It would be a totally different thing. So, I hope it’s another man, another gorgeous man."
Her comments follow actor Gary Oldman's remarks on "The Morning Show," where he suggested his "Slow Horses" co-star Jack Lowden is on the shortlist for the role. Oldman stated that a decision may have been made but not yet announced.
"Jack, it’s been rumored that he’s on the shortlist," Oldman said. "We’re going to find out pretty soon, aren’t we? Because they have picked him. They have made their choice, but they have not announced it yet. So, my fingers are crossed for Jack."
Oldman later clarified his statements to Deadline, explaining, “There’s six people on a shortlist. I heard a rumor that they’ve picked James Bond, but they haven’t announced it yet, which is their prerogative. So, I do not know [who has got the part], but I’m hoping it’s Jack.”
Amazon MGM Studios assumed creative control of the James Bond franchise in 2025. Denis Villeneuve is slated to direct the next installment, with Steven Knight attached as screenwriter. Daniel Craig last portrayed James Bond in 2021's "No Time to Die."
Reports from publications like People magazine have suggested actors such as Paul Mescal, Jacob Elordi, and Jack O’Connell are also being considered for the role, which has been a cornerstone of cinema for over six decades.
Papworth, who appeared in the 1981 film "For Your Eyes Only" and 1983's "Octopussy," both starring Roger Moore, shared fond memories of her time on set. She recalled Moore as a "gentleman" and spoke of the camaraderie among the cast and crew.
"He was an absolute gentleman," she said. "Yes, I know everybody says it. I only have fabulous, fabulous memories of him being funny, telling the best jokes. Very dry, very droll."
Papworth noted that while some believed Bond girls were relegated to a "scrap heap" after their roles, Barbara Broccoli, daughter of the late producer Albert "Cubby" Broccoli, offered her another opportunity. This experience, she said, profoundly impacted her life, leading to lasting friendships.
"My two best friends, I met one on ‘For Your Eyes Only,’ Vanya Seager; she was another Bond girl. And I met my other best friend, Carole Ashby, on ‘Octopussy.’ Carol was there when my baby was born. Vanya and I, we speak every day. I speak to them both every day.
"So, without Bond, I wouldn’t have those two incredible bonds."
Following her Bond film appearances, Papworth transitioned into a career in interior design, where she has found considerable success. She currently directs Camhall Design & Consultancy and co-founded Lustre & Lustre London. She also remains involved in charitable work, including fundraising for Shooting Star Children's Hospices.
