The debate over who will be the next James Bond continues, with former Bond girl Alison Papworth expressing her hope that the role will be filled by another man. Papworth, who appeared in "For Your Eyes Only" and "Octopussy" alongside Roger Moore, told Fox News Digital that casting a woman as 007 would fundamentally alter the character.
"If they’re true to the books, I hope it’s a man," Papworth stated. "A man, just a man. Yes, I think it would be very strange if it were a woman. Don’t you? It would be a totally different thing. So I hope it’s another man, another gorgeous man."
Speculation about the next Bond has intensified, with actor Gary Oldman suggesting his "Slow Horses" co-star Jack Lowden as a potential candidate. Oldman mentioned that Lowden was rumored to be on a shortlist for the role, though he later clarified that he did not know who had been definitively chosen.
Amazon MGM Studios, which gained creative control of the James Bond franchise in 2025, announced in May that the search for the next Bond actor was underway. Denis Villeneuve is slated to direct the upcoming installment, with Steven Knight writing the screenplay. Daniel Craig concluded his tenure as James Bond in 2021 with "No Time to Die." Other actors reportedly in contention include Paul Mescal, Jacob Elordi, and Jack O'Connell.
Papworth shared fond memories of her time working with Roger Moore, describing him as "an absolute gentleman" known for his humor and kindness. She also recalled the contrasting experiences of filming, from luxurious travel to enduring cold conditions on set during the production of "Octopussy."
Her involvement in the Bond franchise led to lasting friendships, including with fellow Bond girls Vanya Seager and Carole Ashby. Papworth noted that her Bond experiences have significantly impacted her life, stating, "Without Bond, I wouldn’t have those two incredible bonds."
Following her acting career, Papworth transitioned into interior design, a field she pursued successfully for many years. She now directs Camhall Design & Consultancy, an interior design firm based in the UK, and co-launched a luxury cleaning service. Papworth also remains involved in charitable work, collaborating with her friend Joan Collins to raise funds for Shooting Star Children's Hospices. Despite stepping away from acting, she continues to participate in fan signings, cherishing the connection with the Bond community.
