Florence Pugh takes on the role of a complex antiheroine in the newly released trailer for Netflix's upcoming series "East of Eden." The adaptation of John Steinbeck's 1952 novel is set to premiere on October 1.
Pugh, 30, portrays Cathy Ames, a central character described as scheming and manipulative. The series spans several decades, from the American Civil War to World War I. The trailer features Pugh's character delivering lines such as, "A monster is a variation from accepted normal. A child may be born perfect but without kindness or conscience," and "Evil is not always apparent at first glance, it can come cloaked in beauty, or goodness or blood."
Christopher Abbott stars as Adam Trask, Cathy's husband in the series. Adam's brother, Charles, played by Mike Faist, issues a warning in the trailer: "She is going to tear you to pieces and I don't want to watch it." The trailer concludes with Cathy Ames stating, "To a monster the norm must seem monstrous."
The series is adapted by Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film version of the novel. Kazan expressed her confidence in Pugh for the role, stating, "I didn’t have a backup. I didn’t have another person that I thought would be just as good. She is the exact right person to play Cathy." Kazan also described Pugh's performance as genius, noting her unparalleled awareness of the camera.
Pugh has had a prolific year with multiple film releases, including roles in "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," "Avengers: Doomsday," and "Dune: Part Three." She has also been rumored to be in consideration for the role of Miss Moneypenny in a potential James Bond spin-off.
The actress recently spoke about the importance of taking time to rest and recharge, telling Elle Spain that she was previously burning herself out and is now prioritizing family and friends to sustain her demanding career.
