Filming has concluded on "Call the Midwife's" new prequel series, "Sisters In Arms," with a first look featuring actress Julie Hesmondhalgh. The series is set in 1939 at the outset of World War II and follows nurse-midwives and nuns serving their community under challenging circumstances.
Hesmondhalgh, known for her role in "Coronation Street," will portray Sister Alice. Helena Wilson stars as a young Sister Julienne. The cast also includes Ellie McKay as Olive Dobbs, Liv Andrusier as Marianne Siegler, and Lizzie Back as Sybil Maxted.
"Sisters In Arms" will also explore the early days of Nonnatus House in Poplar and delve into the formative years of established characters like Sister Julienne, Sister Monica Joan, and Sister Evangelina.
Show creator Heidi Thomas stated that the prequel aims to tell the story of "their finest hour – the Blitz." She added that the series will explore the lives of Sister Monica Joan, Sister Julienne, and Sister Evangelina during the war, focusing on how the conflict affected them and their dedication to their work, highlighting themes of love, birth, separation, courage, and the realities of medical care in a dangerous landscape.
Filming for the prequel began in June, and its premiere is anticipated for Christmas Day. This comes after the 15th series of "Call the Midwife" concluded in March with significant plot developments, including the passing of Sister Monica Joan and the closure of the Maternity Home.
The main series will be taking a hiatus while Thomas works on the prequel and a film adaptation. Cast members Helen George and Laura Main have spoken about the break, noting the stability the show has provided over its 15-year run and anticipating the changes that may come with new characters and storylines upon its return.
