Melania Trump, who will accompany President Donald Trump on a three-day official state visit to the United Kingdom beginning Sept. 17, faces close scrutiny from royal-watchers and fashion experts about what she should — and should not — wear.
The couple will be hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle while Buckingham Palace undergoes renovation. Melania last made a similar trip in 2019, when she attended multiple events including a dinner with the late Queen Elizabeth II and wore garments by British and international designers such as Burberry, Irish-born milliner Philip Treacy, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana and Ralph Lauren. Her 2019 wardrobe ranged from muted navy, khaki and white pieces to a bold red, beaded Givenchy cape dress for a U.S. ambassadorial dinner.
David Loranger, Ph.D., an associate professor of fashion marketing and merchandising at Sacred Heart University, told the Daily Mail that the first lady should avoid any sartorial choice that might be seen as competing with the hosts. "During a state visit, it's generally a faux pas to wear anything that might compete with your host. In other words, if she tried to load up on jewelry (such as a tiara) to compete with the Royals, it could be considered bad form," he said.
Loranger urged caution on outfits that carry explicit messages, saying garments like the well-known "I don't care" jacket — which drew criticism in a previous administration moment — should be avoided. He also warned that UK-specific motifs such as plaid tartan could be perceived as cultural appropriation and recommended that stylists "edit out" such choices.
The professor suggested the first lady should favor classic, understated looks on the trip and, in a departure from past practice, consider wearing American designers rather than British ones. "She's there as a representative of the American people, therefore she should fulfill that role by wearing an American designer," Loranger told the Daily Mail, adding that doing so would align with domestic messaging about "Made in America."
The advice comes amid heightened security preparations for the visit. Police in southern England plan one of the largest drone operations in recent British history to monitor the skies over Windsor Castle and the surrounding security perimeter. Pilots from Thames Valley Police and other forces, including Hampshire Constabulary, will fly drones above a so-called ring of steel around the castle. Sources told the Daily Mail the scale of the resources to be deployed will be similar to those used during the king's coronation in 2023 and at the time of Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.
State visits are tightly choreographed diplomatic events in which protocol governs not only itineraries and speeches but also visual presentation. Observers say clothing choices by visiting first ladies and heads of state are often read as signals, and wardrobe selections during past visits have drawn intense media attention. Melania Trump’s prior UK appearances, including a Gucci dress printed with London landmarks, offered examples of how fashion can attract commentary during high-profile trips.
Organisers have scheduled a grand state banquet as part of the three-day programme. Analysts and stylists say the combination of public interest, royal protocol and heightened bilateral tensions in recent months makes fashion decisions particularly consequential for the first lady’s role on the visit.
The White House and the Office of the First Lady had not publicly detailed wardrobe plans at the time of reporting. Fashion commentators said that, whatever the choices, they will be evaluated not only by British hosts and the international press but also by domestic audiences in the United States.
