Theatre producers have adjusted one of Fagin's most intense scenes in Sir Cameron Mackintosh's West End production of "Oliver!" after concluding the character was too frightening for modern family viewers. This change comes as actor Matt Lucas is set to temporarily assume the role.

Fagin, a central figure in Charles Dickens's "Oliver Twist," has historically been depicted as a complex and volatile criminal. In the current production, a pivotal moment where Fagin discovers Oliver examining his treasure has been modified. An insider noted that previously, the character would react with anger, slamming the box shut and shouting at Oliver. The revised scene now features Fagin speaking sternly, diminishing the original dramatic impact.

Previous portrayals, such as that by Ron Moody in the 1968 film adaptation, presented Fagin with a degree of menace. The current interpretation aims for a more "loveable rogue" persona. The insider suggested this adjustment is intended to align the production with the preferences of contemporary middle-class parents who favor a gentler approach to storytelling.

Matt Lucas, a comedian and actor, is scheduled to take over the role of Fagin for a six-week engagement starting September 22. He will be stepping in while current Fagin performer Simon Lipkin takes paternity leave. The production is directed by Matthew Bourne. Representatives for Sir Cameron Mackintosh have declined to comment on the changes.
