Evan Rachel Wood, who played Kylie Owens, the eldest daughter of Sandra Bullock's character in the 1998 film "Practical Magic," has shared her disappointment at not being included in the upcoming sequel. Wood stated that while she offered her services for the new film, she was informed that the role of Kylie would be recast.
"I am getting asked about this a lot, so I'll just clear it up now; I was not asked to come back and be in the #PracticalMagic sequel," Wood, 38, wrote on Instagram Stories, as reported by Page Six. "I offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line. I was told they are re-casting."
She expressed sadness over the decision, particularly for the fans who have followed the franchise. "It is sad because we bonded with that cast so much as children," Wood told "Entertainment Tonight." "And so, to miss out on the opportunity to look at that cast and look at that house as an adult and see the history in our eyes is something that can't be faked. I'm sad that doesn't get to exist, especially for the fans."
Wood suggested that her character's return might have made more sense if the sequel had followed the book more closely. The original film was based on Alice Hoffman's 1995 novel. Hoffman released a sequel novel, "The Book of Magic," in 2021, which is serving as the inspiration for the new movie directed by Susanne Bier.
"I read the book, and it seems like they're not following the book," Wood explained. "I think, in the book, it would have made sense to bring me back. I think in the way they're approaching it, the way they're doing it, it didn't make sense."
Actress Joey King is set to take over the role of Kylie in the sequel. Alexandra Artrip, who played Bullock's younger daughter Antonia Owens, will also not return, with Maisie Williams stepping into that role. Aidan Quinn, who played Gary Hallet, Bullock's love interest in the original, was also not asked to return.
Despite her disappointment, Wood offered her well wishes to the cast and crew. "But I wish them all the best, and obviously wish Joey the best," she said. "And I hope she had a great time. I still have really fond memories of being in the original."
The "Practical Magic" sequel is scheduled to be released on September 11.
