Evan Rachel Wood, who played Kylie Owens in the 1998 cult classic "Practical Magic," will not be appearing in the upcoming sequel, "Practical Magic 2." Wood confirmed that she was not asked to return for the film, which is set to reunite stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. The role of Kylie Owens will be recast with Joey King. Wood shared her thoughts on the decision in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight.

"I read the book, and it seems like they’re not following the book," Wood stated. "I think in the book, it would’ve made sense to bring me back. I think in the way they’re redoing it and approaching it, it didn’t make sense."

Wood also expressed disappointment for the fans and the missed opportunity to revisit the film's world as an adult. "But it is sad, because you know we bonded with that cast so much as children," she said. "And so to miss out on the opportunity to look at that cast and look at that house as an adult and see the history in our eyes is something that can’t be faked. So I’m sad that doesn’t get to exist, especially for the fans."

Wood had previously addressed her absence on social media. In an Instagram Story post last year, she wrote, according to The Hollywood Reporter, "I am getting asked about this a lot, so l’ll just clear it up now; I was not asked to come back and be in the ‘Practical Magic’ sequel. l offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line. I was told they are recasting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters."

The original "Practical Magic," based on Alice Hoffman's 1995 novel, followed witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, portrayed by Bullock and Kidman, as they used magic to combat an evil spirit. Despite a lukewarm reception and box office performance upon its release, the film has since gained a significant following, becoming a perennial Halloween favorite.

Wood stated that she has "really fond memories of being in the original" and harbors no ill will towards King or her former co-stars. "I wish them all the best, and obviously wish Joey the best,” she said, “and hope she had a great time."

Returning cast members for "Practical Magic 2" also include Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, reprising their roles from the original film. The sequel is scheduled for release in September.
