LEOGANG, Austria — The European Beard Championships crowned a winner by a whisker Saturday, as competitors from across Europe gathered in Leogang for the notoriously facial hair–centric event.
Set in a gym, the competition featured a face-to-face judging format that moved through stages: moustache assessment, then chin and cheek evaluation, and finally full-beard scoring around 3 p.m. Participants hailed from Austria, Germany, Belgium, France and other European nations.
Notable contestants included Norbert Topf of Austria, whose display featured eight looping spirals; Andreas Pelowski of Germany with a gravity-defying moustache; Hans Peter Weis of Germany with a star-shaped, pointed beard; and Christian Feicht of Germany with twists and loops in moustache and facial hair. German competitors also included Gert Bauer, who paired sharp facial hair with a quirky hat, and Uwe Hohmall, who posed with two sets of glasses as his beard split in two directions. Ronny Coosemans of Belgium wore a crown alongside a large looped beard, while Wilfried Barrial of France opted for a circular motif within his facial hair.
Two Austrian contenders, Roland Schartner and Thomas Grundner, appeared in colorful attire as the competition moved toward its final evaluations. Jurors weighed artistry, symmetry and grooming precision as spectators watched the evolving styles.
The day ended with an awards ceremony for the winners and an evening performance by the Leogang Music Band, marking the town's 135th anniversary.
The event underscores the appeal of beard culture in Europe, a niche interest that blends craftsmanship, personal expression and competitive spirit in a festive setting.
