Norbert Topf of Austria narrowly claimed the European Beard Championships title at a gym in Leogang, Austria, on Sept. 20, 2025, in a competition that drew contenders from across Europe.
Competitors faced a face-to-face assessment in multiple rounds as judges evaluated moustaches, chins and cheeks, and full beards before an overall winner was chosen. The event began with moustache categories, progressed through jawline and cheek evaluations, and culminated with full-beard judging around 3 p.m., with the winner announced during an evening ceremony.
Norbert Topf was joined by a lineup of notable contenders from Germany, Belgium, France and elsewhere. Andreas Pelowski from Germany defied gravity with a huge moustache, while Hans Peter Weis from Germany showcased a star-shaped pointed beard. Christian Feicht from Germany displayed twists and loops in both moustache and beard, and Gert Bauer from Germany paired his sharp facial hair with a quirky hat to match the look. Ronny Coosemans from Belgium wore a crown alongside his large, looped beard, and Uwe Hohmall from Germany posed with two sets of glasses with a beard that diverged in two directions. Wilfried Barrial from France opted for a circle-centric look, and Roland Schartner and Thomas Grundner from Austria appeared in colorful attire as two others prepared to take the stage. A competitor showcased a long white beard and wide moustache, illustrating the diverse styles on display as the competition progressed.
The event, staged at a Leogang gym, emphasized the competition’s face-to-face format, a hallmark of the European Beard Championships designed to highlight creativity, symmetry and grooming precision. A jury evaluated contestants throughout the day, with the audience treated to a parade of styles that ranged from meticulously twisted mustaches to oversized, gravity-defying beards. The day concluded with an awards ceremony, followed by evening entertainment from the Leogang Music Band on its 135th anniversary. The championship underscored the growth of beard culture across Europe, drawing participants and spectators who celebrate grooming as a performing art and a cultural pastime.
The champion’s beard, noted for eight looping spirals, reflected a blend of technical skill and theatrical flair that has become a signature at European beard events. Organizers and participants described the competition as a festive convergence of craftsmanship, personal expression and cross-border camaraderie, with plans for future editions anticipated to travel to other European venues in the coming years.
