True elegance at a wedding is timeless, understated, and authentic, according to etiquette expert Laura Windsor. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Windsor, often referred to as the 'Queen of Etiquette,' shared a list of popular wedding features that can detract from a sophisticated and memorable affair.
Windsor advises couples seeking timeless nuptials to reconsider elements such as doughnut towers, which she states rarely convey sophistication, unlike a traditional wedding cake. "Doughnuts and elegance are not natural friends," she explained. "Sugary, sticky and oversized treats rarely convey sophistication."
While fireworks can add a celebratory touch, Windsor noted that a lackluster display can be worse than none. For a truly impactful effect, she recommends a significant investment in a professionally choreographed show. "If you are going to do it, do it properly. You will need to splash out and end the display with an impressive bang," she said.
Trendy items like matching bridal party pajamas are also on Windsor's list of elements to avoid. She described them as potentially "performative" and contrary to the subtle nature of elegance, emphasizing that true elegance is about being present in the moment rather than creating content for social media. Similarly, photo booths equipped with "cheap, plastic or obviously fake" props are seen as undermining an elegant atmosphere and unlikely to produce timeless photographs.
When it comes to floral arrangements, Windsor stressed the importance of fresh flowers over artificial ones. "Artificial flowers may look convincing from a distance, but on close inspection will look uninspiring and spoil the overall aesthetic," she stated. Real flowers, she added, offer natural beauty and fragrance that artificial versions cannot replicate.
Color palettes also play a crucial role, with Windsor suggesting that soft neutrals and muted tones contribute more to an elegant feel than bright, bold colors, which can overwhelm a setting. Themed weddings, inspired by films or television series, are also discouraged, as they can take focus away from the guests and the couple. Windsor advocates for simplicity, noting that most guests prefer to attend a celebration where they can be themselves rather than participate in a costume party.
Other elements Windsor suggests skipping for a sophisticated wedding include the garter toss, which she considers "unnecessarily attention-seeking," and wearing sunglasses during important moments or conversations, as eye contact is fundamental. Even comfort choices like wedding trainers are deemed inappropriate for the ceremony itself, best reserved for less formal occasions.
Windsor's advice centers on creating a memorable experience through authenticity and subtlety, rather than chasing fleeting trends. She believes that focusing on these timeless qualities will result in a more elegant and sophisticated wedding celebration.
