A participant in a "hardcore" escape room experience in Cajar, Spain, was severely burned when organizers allegedly poured gasoline on her and ignited it. The incident occurred in 2022 at a venue called Villa Amparo.
The victim was reportedly restrained with shackles and a rope around her neck as part of the game. She noted that a liquid poured on her "smelled an awful lot like gasoline," but her concerns were allegedly disregarded by the staff. One of the suspects then lit a lighter, causing the victim to become engulfed in flames.
Following the incident, actors involved reportedly fled the scene, and someone intervened with a fire extinguisher. The woman sustained severe burns and spent months in a specialized burn unit, requiring a lengthy hospitalization for recovery. She also reported significant psychological distress as a result of the injuries.
The group participating in the "hardcore escape room" were informed of the rules but not the associated risks. The prosecution is seeking two years in prison for the three defendants on charges of negligent injury, while the victim's private prosecution is requesting three years. The victim's insurer has also filed a claim for €1.9 million in compensation for her injuries. The trial for the incident began on Monday.
