Eric Dane did not appear at the 2025 Emmy Awards as planned, sparking concern among fans after a scheduled mini "Grey's Anatomy" reunion with former co-star Jesse Williams did not take place.
Williams presented the award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series alone, and there was no onstage mention of Dane. Deadline reported that Dane stepped down from the presenting duties at the last minute, likely on the day of the ceremony. Representatives for Dane had not responded to requests for comment by the time of publication.
Dane, 52, revealed in April that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a progressive neurological condition that weakens muscles and impairs physical function. In a statement to People at the time he said, “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
In a later interview with Diane Sawyer in June, Dane described significant progression of symptoms, saying, “I have one functioning arm. My left side is functioning. My right side, [which is my dominant side], has completely stopped working.” He added that his remaining function was declining and that he was worried about his legs. Medical experts say about half of people with ALS live roughly three years after symptom onset, though some live much longer.
The diagnosis came a month after Dane and his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, called off their divorce. The couple share two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13.
Following the initial announcement, Dane made a rare public appearance at the premiere of his police procedural, Countdown. Speaking to Variety at that event, he said, "I feel good. It's nice to be here with everybody and see the hours and hours of work that we put into this come alive on screen." In an earlier statement he said he felt fortunate to be able to continue working and was looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria.
Social media reaction to Dane's absence was immediate, with fans expressing worry and disappointment that the planned reunion with Williams did not go ahead. Some users noted that Williams took the stage solo and questioned whether Dane’s nonappearance signaled a change in his condition; others urged respect for the actor’s privacy.
Deadline’s account that Dane withdrew at the last minute aligns with reports that Williams had expected to present with him. The Emmys ceremony proceeded without further comment about Dane onstage.
Dane rose to prominence on Grey’s Anatomy and later appeared on the HBO series Euphoria and other projects. Since announcing his diagnosis, he has spoken publicly about his intention to continue working while managing his health, and he has asked for privacy for his family as they navigate treatment and care.
Representatives for Dane did not immediately reply to additional requests for comment. The actor’s absence from the Emmys marks his first missed high-profile awards appearance since going public with his diagnosis, and it has intensified public attention on his health status and ongoing career plans.
