The 78th Emmy Awards are set to take place Monday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with HBO Max's "The Pitt" and Apple TV+'s "Widow's Bay" among the leading contenders.
Mariska Hargitay, star of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," will host the ceremony. NBC, celebrating its 100th anniversary, is broadcasting the event with a peacock blue carpet. The telecast will air live on NBC and stream live on Peacock at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, 5 p.m. Pacific Time.
The ceremony will also mark the 30th anniversary of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and the 50th anniversary of "Charlie's Angels," with cast members slated to appear as presenters.
"The Pitt," which won best drama, best actor for Noah Wyle, and best supporting actress for Katherine LaNasa at the previous ceremony, is expected to contend for repeat wins. Wyle is nominated for three trophies this year, and the show has multiple nominations in the supporting actor and actress categories.
"Hacks," which concluded its run on HBO Max, received the most comedy nominations. Star Jean Smart is anticipated to win best actress in a comedy for the fifth consecutive time.
However, the Apple TV+ horror comedy "Widow's Bay" is poised to be a strong competitor. Having already secured eight wins at earlier ceremonies for non-televised categories, the show can still win up to six more awards on Monday night. A significant win would break the record for most Emmys in a single season for a comedy, a record previously set by "The Studio."
"Widow's Bay" star Matthew Rhys is a favorite for best actor in a comedy, and breakout star Kate O'Flynn is a contender for best supporting actress.
In the drama categories, Rhea Seehorn is nominated for best actress in a drama for her role in "Pluribus" on Apple TV+. Her competition includes Zendaya, a previous winner for "Euphoria."
The night could also see a first-time Emmy win for 84-year-old Harrison Ford, who is among the favorites for best supporting actor in a comedy for his role in "Shrinking."
