Nate Bargatze, host of the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, made a brief onstage joke referencing Sydney Sweeney’s summer advertising controversy moments before the actor walked up to present an award Sunday night.
“I forgot — I have a blue jean tux on for some reason. We had, like, a joke — there’s a cummerbund, and I forgot what it... I don’t know. All right, please welcome two-time Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney,” Bargatze said as he introduced Sweeney to announce the nominees for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Sweeney walked to the podium and proceeded with the presentation without acknowledging the remark.
The exchange recalled a controversy earlier this year over an American Eagle campaign featuring Sweeney that played on the phrase “good genes.” The ad drew widespread criticism on social media and commentary in political circles. Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, posted on X denouncing the backlash as “cancel culture run amok,” and former President Donald Trump said, “if Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, then I think her ad is fantastic.” Sweeney was not nominated for an Emmy this year.
Sweeney, who has been nominated for Emmys twice in her career, has continued to work in television and film amid public scrutiny of the commercial. The Emmy ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sept. 14 included moments in which hosts and presenters made topical jokes that referenced recent headlines; on this occasion the remark was delivered immediately before Sweeney’s appearance onstage.
The brief onstage quip did not provoke any visible reaction from Sweeney, and she completed the presentation as scheduled. The exchange drew attention from viewers and entertainment outlets noting the intersection of awards-show banter and ongoing public conversations about celebrity marketing and social media backlash.
