Ellie Goulding has released her fifth album, "I Know Too Much," marking a return to a more intimate and self-aware musical style. The album arrives three years after her 2023 release, "Higher Than Heaven," which Goulding described as her "least personal" effort.
Announcing the end of her marriage to Caspar Jopling in 2024, Goulding, 39, has also recently welcomed a second child with her new partner, actor Beau Minniear. These life events have influenced the direction of "I Know Too Much," which Goulding wrote while at a perceived "crossroads."
The album delves into past romantic experiences and the complexities of relationships, but it also celebrates the joy of new love. Working with Toronto producer Jack Rochon, known for his work on Beyoncé's "Cowboy Carter," Goulding has re-emphasized her signature vocal style, characterized by a fluttery, high-pitched delivery.
"I Know Too Much" opens with "Black Prada Dress," a track that examines a toxic relationship and reflects on the online scrutiny faced by contemporary artists. Goulding sings, "I'm trying to be a Hollywood baby, 'cause you make me think that London hates me."
Other tracks include the acoustic ballad "Always Think Of You," where Goulding reflects on a past lover and admits the relationship was a "stupid mistake." In "Misremember You," she tells a former partner, "I still see you in a good light from time to time."
The album features moments reminiscent of Goulding's earlier work, blending pop hooks with folk influences. While "Nobody Dances" is described as a generic synth-pop track, the title track is driven by acoustic guitar, and "4 Seasons" transitions from an acoustic beginning to a chiming conclusion.
Goulding's recent musical explorations have included a guest vocal on Muse's "The Wow! Signal" album, where she adopted a rock-influenced style, and earlier forays into dance and R&B. With "I Know Too Much," she returns to dreamy pop melodies and introspective lyrics, a combination that critics suggest results in her strongest album in years.
