A vibrant mural has appeared in the Welsh village of Pontyates, featuring Dot Cotton, the beloved character from the long-running BBC soap opera Eastenders. The artwork celebrates the surprising childhood link between the village and the late actress June Brown, who famously portrayed the character for decades.
The initiative to create the mural was funded through local fundraisers. While the older generation in Pontyates may recall Brown's connection to the area, younger residents are less familiar with it. Nevertheless, the mural has become a talking point and a source of local pride.
June Brown starred as Dot Cotton in Eastenders from 1985 to 1993, and again from 1997 to 2020. According to local resident Rhian, Brown herself mentioned her positive experiences in the Cwm Gwendraeth area of Pontyates during an episode of the show. This personal connection, though not widely known among all fans, has now been immortalized in paint.
The mural, which also features local elements such as a rugby player and a red dragon, is seen as a welcome addition to the village, providing a pleasant sight for residents and visitors alike.
