Members of the legendary band Earth, Wind & Fire are rallying around drummer John Paris after a critical medical emergency left him hospitalized. Paris reportedly suffered a cardiac incident just before the band was scheduled to perform with Lionel Ritchie at the Chase Center in San Francisco. The concert was subsequently canceled.
Bandmates, including saxophonist Gary Bias and keyboardist Myron McKinley, have contributed to a GoFundMe established to assist Paris and his wife, Kathy Merrick. Bias donated $200, and McKinley contributed $500. The fundraiser aims to alleviate the financial burden of medical expenses, travel, lodging, and other unforeseen costs associated with Paris's unexpected health crisis.
Shelly Clark, a founding member of the group Honey Cone, initiated the fundraising effort. Merrick, also a founding member of Honey Cone, has remained by her husband's side. Honey Cone has postponed its own performances to allow Merrick to focus on caring for Paris.
The GoFundMe description highlights the emotional toll of the situation, noting the growing expenses for Merrick, who is traveling from their Los Angeles area home. The effort is supported by other friends and collaborators, including Tazz Cole, Grecco Buratto, former Chicago band member Jeff Coffey, and music manager Atron Gregory, who have also made donations.
As of the latest update, the fundraiser has garnered over $41,000 toward its $50,000 goal. Paris is currently receiving medical care and is reported to be surrounded by his family and the support of friends and fans.
