Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris is in critical condition following a cardiac incident that required him to be placed in a medically induced coma. The incident occurred last Thursday, just moments before the band was scheduled to perform with Lionel Richie at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
According to an update from supporters, Paris briefly awoke and asked for his wife, musician Kathy Merrick, before making a lighthearted remark to a friend. However, his condition worsened shortly after, with his blood pressure rising and difficulty breathing, leading doctors to sedate him again to stabilize his body.
Supporters indicated that Paris is resting under sedation while his medical team monitors him and plans the safest course of treatment. He has shown slight responses to music, but faces a lengthy recovery. A GoFundMe has been established by family and friends to help Paris, Merrick, and their daughter Kyla with medical expenses, travel, lodging, and other unforeseen costs. Several band members, including Gary Bias and Myron McKinley, have contributed to the fundraiser.
Merrick, also a member of the group Honey Cone, has remained by her husband's side. Honey Cone has postponed upcoming performances to allow Merrick to attend to Paris.
This health emergency for Paris comes months after Lionel Richie experienced his own on-stage dizzy spell in June, which led to a brief hospitalization before he resumed his tour.
