Dylan Sprouse, known for his roles on Disney Channel, has described his experience as a child actor as "child labor." Speaking on his podcast "Wildmen," Sprouse, now 34, shared his perspective on the demands placed on young performers.
"We just sang and danced. It’s still child labor!" Sprouse stated, drawing a parallel between his work and historical forms of child labor. He explained that working in television as a child felt akin to holding "a full office job," involving consistent hours and a structured workday.
Sprouse and his twin brother, Cole Sprouse, began their acting careers at a very young age. They shared the role of Julian in the 1999 film "Big Daddy" and later starred as twins Zack and Cody Martin in the popular Disney Channel series "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody" and its spin-off, "The Suite Life on Deck."
After the "Suite Life" series concluded, Dylan Sprouse took a break from acting to pursue higher education, studying video game design at New York University. He has since returned to acting, though he noted on the podcast that he still grapples with "mental hurdles" stemming from his long-standing involvement in the entertainment industry.
He described experiencing a sense of "void" when projects ended during his childhood, indicating that his self-esteem had become closely tied to his ability to work as an actor. His brother, Cole Sprouse, has also spoken about their early careers, attributing their entry into acting to their mother's financial decisions at the time. Cole Sprouse has previously mentioned that their father had advocated for them to have a more normal childhood.
