The film adaptation of the musical “Wicked: For Good” features a cameo from Dorothy Gale, the protagonist of “The Wizard of Oz.” The film, which explores the origins of the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, and her relationship with Glinda the Good Witch, is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
Dorothy appears in the latter part of the film. In a scene that mirrors the events of the original “The Wizard of Oz,” Elphaba kidnaps Dorothy. During this sequence, Glinda visits Elphaba, leading to their reconciliation and the song “For Good.” The film concludes by referencing the original “Wizard of Oz” ending, where Dorothy defeats Elphaba by dousing her with water. This climactic event is depicted primarily through shadow play, with a brief glimpse of Dorothy's face visible after she retrieves Elphaba's broom.
The role of Dorothy is portrayed by Bethany Weaver, an actress, dancer, and choreographer from the United Kingdom. This marks Weaver's first on-screen role. In an interview, Weaver described the experience of stepping onto the set as Dorothy, wearing the character's signature silver shoes. She stated that while she did not aim to impersonate Judy Garland, who famously played Dorothy in the 1939 film, she sought to embody the character's resilience.
While Weaver provided the physical performance for Dorothy, her limited dialogue was voiced over by Tara Strong, a prolific voice actress known for her work on animated series such as “The Fairly Odd Parents” and “The Powerpuff Girls.”
“Wicked: For Good” is now streaming on Netflix. The film can also be purchased or rented through digital platforms.
