Dolly Parton's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been vandalized with scratches, according to reports. The incident occurred just days after the legendary singer's death on August 25.
Fans had gathered at the star to leave flowers, cards, and other mementos following the news of Parton's passing. One fan, who visited the star on Monday night, reported finding fresh scratches over the singer's name.
Ana Martinez, a spokesperson for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, confirmed the vandalism to Page Six. "A fan went to the star yesterday and reported on social that the star was vandalized with many scratches. From the photo she posted, it does appear the star was vandalized with scratches," Martinez stated. She added that scheduled repairs were already in progress.
"The flowers had been removed yesterday morning in order to do the scheduled repair on the star today. This repair was set up late last week and the crew just completed the first part of making said repairs," Martinez explained. The Hollywood Historic Trust, which maintains the stars, is overseeing the ongoing repairs. The star is expected to be polished on Friday.
Reports from fans at the scene suggest that a custodian mentioned a candle was kicked over, and its broken glass shards may have been used to scratch the star. Local news outlet KNX posted photos of repair work on Tuesday, showing damage to the star.
Dolly Parton received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in June 1984. Her death at age 80 was announced by her nephew and head of security. Her representatives later confirmed she died following a brief battle with cancer. Parton was laid to rest on August 28 in a private ceremony, beside her husband Carl Dean.
