The Broadway musical based on the life of Dolly Parton, which the singer was actively involved in before her death, is set to open as planned this season. "As was Dolly’s wish, the Broadway production of 'Dolly: A True Original Musical' will begin previews December 7 at the St. James Theatre in New York City," a spokesperson for the production stated.

Opening night is scheduled for January 19, 2027, which would have been Parton's 81st birthday. The musical features many of Parton's hit songs, including "9 to 5," "Jolene," and "Islands in the Stream," alongside new material written by the artist.

Adam Speers, a producer for Ambassador Theatre Group, worked closely with Parton on the show, traveling monthly from London to Nashville. The musical had a previous tryout in Nashville in the summer of 2025. Parton described the show in July as an exploration of her origins, her losses, her loves, and her journey, all told in her own words and through her music.

The production will feature three actresses portraying Parton at different stages of her life.
