World-renowned DJ Diplo trekked six miles on foot to leave the Burning Man festival after heavy rains transformed the Nevada desert into a mudscape. The downpours forced the closure of the event's main entry and exit gates, leaving attendees stranded.
Diplo shared videos of his muddy trek on Instagram, documenting his walk along the saturated terrain. "Here I am, walking out of Burning Man again," he said in one clip. "Six miles in, we’re almost to the road." He later commented on the situation, stating, "It’s f—d up, but I love it… Life presents many challenges, you’ve just got to persevere."
He noted that the walk took approximately two hours, as indicated by a navigation app on his phone, despite a friend's estimation of a longer duration. This marks a repeat of a similar situation for the DJ; in 2023, Diplo and actor Chris Rock famously walked for miles through mud to exit the festival before being rescued by a fan in a pickup truck. Approximately 73,000 people were affected by the severe weather conditions this year.
Diplo had been performing at Burning Man from Wednesday night into Friday morning, reportedly partying until 6:30 a.m. after his Thursday performances. The festival, a nine-day event celebrating art, music, and counterculture, is held annually in the Black Rock Desert. This year's event received 0.22 inches of rain, according to SFGate.
Amidst the challenging conditions, a man in his mid-50s was found dead at the festival on Thursday after suffering a medical emergency. Organizers confirmed that lifesaving measures were administered, and the individual was taken to the camp's emergency care center, where he was pronounced dead.
Data indicates that Burning Man has seen a decrease in attendance since its 2019 peak, while the proportion of attendees in their 40s and 50s has been increasing. The cost of attending the festival has also risen.
