An increasing number of travelers are seeking 'digital detoxes' while abroad, a trend exemplified by the Oasyhotel nestled in Tuscany's Apennine Mountains. The hotel, which opened in April 2022, emphasizes a slower pace of life and encourages guests to disconnect from technology and immerse themselves in the natural surroundings.
Located within the 1,000-hectare Oasi Dynamo Nature Reserve, the Oasyhotel offers a variety of activities aimed at fostering well-being and a connection with nature. These include 'forest bathing,' a Japanese practice involving mindful walks through woodland to reduce stress and enhance mental health by breathing in phytoncides released by trees. Guests can also participate in yoga, meditation, and wildlife tours.
The hotel's design actively supports its philosophy of disconnection, featuring 17 cabin-style wooden lodges spread across the reserve, each intentionally lacking screens. The architecture is intended to draw guests outdoors to enjoy the landscape.
For recreation, guests have access to a floating bio-pool on the lake, where they can swim or use kayaks and paddleboards. E-bikes are also provided to explore the forest trails.
Despite initial apprehension about a silent retreat, the natural environment provided ample sensory engagement. The sounds of woodpeckers and the calls of roe deer were noted, and an evening 'Into the Night' walk offered opportunities to potentially spot wolves, deer, and boar, even if only footprints were found.
By the end of a three-day stay, the author found that the absence of digital connectivity and noise was not missed, leading to an appreciation for the quiet. Lodges at Oasyhotel start from £517 per night and can accommodate up to four people, with e-bikes included for exploring the nature reserve.
