Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film One Battle After Another opens in theaters Sept. 26. Clocking in at about 170 minutes, the R-rated drama blends action, dark humor and moral drama into a sprawling vigilante epic that centers on Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob, a gun-toting leader who drives a movement called the French 75 and pushes a high-velocity chain of events typical of the director’s audacious style.
Bob is a husband and father who raids detention centers and bombs banks and courthouses with his group, the French 75. After Bob’s girlfriend and the mother of his child, known as Perfidia Beverly Hills (Teyana Taylor), is captured, she betrays the rebels, prompting Bob and his daughter Willa (Chase Infiniti) to assume new identities and vanish for 16 years. The pursuit is led by Col. Steven J. Lockjaw (Sean Penn), a boot-camp officer with a fixation on Perfidia; Benicio del Toro plays Sergio, a dojo sensei with a quiet, wry guidance.
Regina King plays Deandra, who goes into hiding with the family and offers support as the manhunt closes in. The story also follows a mysterious subculture of a racist society called the Christmas Adventurers Society, whose half-serious, over-the-top ritual adds texture to the final act but is not deeply developed. The desert chase finale becomes the film’s centerpiece, a relentlessly kinetic sequence in which cars roar across dunes, pump up the tension and reframe the pursuit in almost Hitchcockian terms while echoing the epic geography of classic large-scale cinema.
Critics describe the film as both a satire and a raw action drama, unafraid to mix brutal violence with blunt humor and melodrama. DiCaprio’s performance draws comparisons to his portrayals of obsessive, single-minded figures, here transposed into a modern vigilante narrative that tests the boundaries of moral clarity. Anderson’s direction emphasizes scale, texture and momentum, delivering a film that some viewers will find exhilarating and others overwhelming. As a cultural statement, One Battle After Another cements Anderson’s reputation for bold, polarizing work that defies easy genre labeling. The film arrives with the release date set for Sept. 26, and its lengthy run time and mature content are expected to be factors for some audiences, while others may be drawn to the film’s audacious fusion of genres and character-driven storytelling.
