Demi Lovato said she was “couldn’t be happier” for Selena Gomez after the singer announced her engagement to producer Benny Blanco, offering public praise for the couple’s recent music and sending her best wishes on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live.
Lovato, 33, told host Andy Cohen on Tuesday that she was a fan of Gomez and Blanco’s joint album I Said I Love You First, released in March, singling out the track “Bluest Flame.” “Really, really great job. I love the songs on it,” Lovato said, adding, “I just wish her the best.” Lovato also “liked” Gomez’s Instagram post showing the engagement ring after Blanco proposed in December 2024.
Gomez, 33, and Blanco, 37, have acknowledged that their relationship moved quickly after they began dating, and media outlets have reported the couple plans to marry later this month. Blanco has repeatedly described their wedding planning as hurried; on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in March, he said, “We honestly haven’t even figured anything [out]. We’ve been moving so quickly.” On the Therapuss podcast in July, he added, “We haven’t even had time to get into it, but we’re excited. I think this summer, we’re going to sit down and be like, ‘OK, what are we doing?’”
Lovato and Gomez first met as children in 2002 while working on Barney & Friends and remained close during their Disney Channel years. Their friendship appeared to break down in later years; Lovato told Harper’s Bazaar in 2020 that they were “not friends.” She later clarified that growing up together left her with affection for Gomez, saying, “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. … I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.” In the same Harper’s Bazaar interview, Lovato said Miley Cyrus was the only person from that era she still remained in contact with.
Gomez’s social circle now includes Taylor Swift, who joked on Instagram last year about being a potential flower girl for Gomez and Blanco’s wedding. Gomez and Blanco’s public comments on wedding timing have been cautious, even as outlets reported a ceremony could occur soon.
Lovato has moved forward in her own personal life. She married musician Jutes in California in May after the couple announced their engagement in December 2023. Lovato shared engagement photos at the time and later posted about her marriage, saying she looked forward to their life together.
While Lovato and Gomez’s relationship has evolved from childhood friendship to estrangement, Lovato’s remarks on Watch What Happens Live reflect positive public wishes for Gomez and Blanco’s engagement and appreciation for their collaborative music project. The couple’s reported wedding timeline and Blanco’s comments about planning underscore how quickly their partnership has progressed since the public announcement of their engagement late last year.
Representatives for Gomez, Blanco and Lovato did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
