Demi Lovato nearly experienced a double wardrobe malfunction Monday evening while attending and performing at the Paper x Demi Lovato NYFW Boom Party at BOOM inside The Standard in New York City.

Photographs from the event show the 33-year-old singer wearing a blue, topstitched denim leotard that was unbuttoned at the top to reveal a shiny olive-green bra, which at times appeared to be slipping. She paired the leotard with a low-slung green skirt that rode down to expose the hips of the leotard and which, on several occasions during the night, looked as if it might fall off. Lovato, who added slender black sunglasses and dewy pink lip gloss, performed for a gathered crowd and displayed several of her tattoos while dancing and singing.

Lovato has been teasing a move toward a dance-pop sound and will release her ninth studio album, It's Not That Deep, on Oct. 24. The record, which will feature 11 tracks, is executive produced by Zhone, who has worked with Charli XCX and Kylie Minogue. Singles released ahead of the album include "Fast" and "Here All Night."

In a statement about the new music, Lovato said, "This music is a perfect reflection of where I'm at today. I had such an incredible time making this album with Zhone and it was such a freeing experience to let loose and have fun with it. With my past eras, I often wrote cathartic music about heavy topics that I needed to process. When I got back in the studio this time around, those songs just weren't resonating anymore because I'm not in that place in life. I'm happy, I'm in love, and I just want to enjoy life and have fun. I realised it's not that deep anymore, and that became the ethos for this album. It's Not That Deep is meant for late nights and dancefloors, and I can't wait for you to all dance with me."

Lovato's previous album, 2022's Holy Fvck, found the singer embracing a rock sound. Guitarist Nita Strauss, who has supported Lovato on tour, told Metal Hammer magazine that the record "wasn't as big a departure as I thought it would be. Demi made a really cool rock album, so they hired a rock band to do a rock show. Demi's a metalhead at heart. I'd walk past her dressing room and she'd be listening to Megadeth. She turned me onto this great deathcore band called Bodysnatcher. She's the real deal." Strauss added that Lovato's fanbase has been supportive of her stylistic changes.

Photos and eyewitness accounts from Monday's events also showed Lovato arriving earlier at the Luar fashion show during New York Fashion Week. The singer's wardrobe issue at the BOOM party drew attention on social media and in nightlife coverage, while industry notices have focused on her forthcoming album and stylistic shift.

Lovato's transition from the rock-tinged sounds of Holy Fvck back to dance-oriented material follows a period in which she described writing as a form of catharsis. For It's Not That Deep, she said the creative process was intended to reflect a different personal place and to create music suited to "late nights and dancefloors." The album's release is expected to mark a new promotional phase for the artist, who has continued to perform and appear at high-profile fashion and industry events in New York City.
