Demi Lovato publicly congratulated Selena Gomez after Gomez’s engagement to producer Benny Blanco and praised the pair’s recently released collaborative album.

Lovato, 33, made the remarks Tuesday on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, saying she had heard clips of Gomez’s appearance on the Therapuss podcast and that Gomez’s comments were “really, really sweet.” “I couldn’t be happier,” Lovato said, adding “I just wish her the best.” Lovato also complimented Gomez and Blanco’s album I Said I Love You First, singling out the track “Bluest Flame” as her favorite.

Gomez, 33, announced her engagement to Blanco, 37, after roughly 18 months of dating. Reports say Blanco proposed on Dec. 10 with an eight-carat marquise diamond ring and that the couple plans to marry at a private residence in Montecito, California. Media reports have also said that Gomez has declined to convert to Blanco’s Jewish faith.

Lovato and Gomez’s conversation in public comes nearly a quarter-century after both women began their careers as child performers. They co-starred on the children’s series Barney & Friends and later appeared together in Disney Channel’s 2009 film Princess Protection Program. Each went on to establish separate pop careers and high-profile public lives; both have dated members of the Jonas brothers at different points.

On Watch What Happens Live, Lovato said she had listened to I Said I Love You First and praised its songs and production. Blanco is a longtime collaborator in pop and production circles; he first met Gomez during a 2008 business meeting and later worked on her 2015 album Revival and the 2023 single “Single Soon.”

Lovato’s remarks came while she was promoting her own music. She is due to release her ninth studio album, It’s Not That Deep, on Oct. 24. Lovato appeared on the show in a brown Pierre Cardin catsuit and addressed recent public attention to her weight change. She also has expanded her acting work, taking a dramatic role as Nova in Stephanie Laing’s film Tow, which is scheduled to screen at the Newport Beach Film Festival on Oct. 17. The film’s cast includes Rose Byrne, Dominic Sessa, Ariana DeBose, Octavia Spencer and Simon Rex.

Lovato married former backup vocalist Jordan “Jutes” Lutes on May 25 in Santa Barbara, California. The couple met in January 2022 while Lovato was recording her eighth studio album, Holy Fvck; Lovato has said she wrote a song, “4 Ever 4 Me,” especially about him and the pair got matching tattoos reflecting the track.

Gomez and Blanco’s engagement and subsequent public commentary from peers such as Lovato highlight continued public interest in the personal lives of long-standing pop figures who began as child stars and have remained in the public eye through music, film and high-profile relationships.
