David Jonsson has been revealed as the actor who will portray the new Black Panther in the upcoming Marvel film, "Black Panther 3." Director Ryan Coogler made the announcement Saturday during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

Jonsson is set to play an adult version of T’Challa II, also known as Toussaint, the son of the original Black Panther, T’Challa, who was famously portrayed by the late Chadwick Boseman. T’Challa II was first introduced to audiences in a post-credits scene of the 2022 film "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," where he was shown with his mother, Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o.

"Black Panther 3" is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 15, 2028.

Coogler, who also directed "Black Panther" and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," praised Jonsson's acting abilities, highlighting his recent roles in "Alien: Romulus" and "The Long Walk." Jonsson appeared on stage alongside "Black Panther" stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, as well as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

"I actually don't want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking. But believe me, the honor is entirely mine. Thank you," Jonsson said upon joining the panel.

Following Chadwick Boseman's death in 2020, the script for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" was rewritten. In that film, T’Challa's sister Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, assumes the mantle of Black Panther.

Winston Duke, who plays M'Baku, expressed his confidence in Jonsson. "I don't have any advice. I know what I have to do with him, which is to play with him. I have to trust him. I have to give him the same grace that was extended to me," Duke told Variety, reflecting on his own experience joining the franchise.

Letitia Wright described the casting news as "really beautiful" in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, calling Jonsson a "special person with a good heart." She also commented on Shuri's evolving role, noting that she will now guide her nephew, T’Challa II.

"I’m going to have a really good time, a lot of fun and I’m going to pick on him so much," Wright teased about working with Jonsson in the upcoming film.

Both Wright and Duke are also set to appear in "Avengers: Doomsday," due in theaters this December.
