Dakota Johnson, 36, has undergone a striking transformation to portray a version of Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe in the upcoming short film "Flesh Impact." The project, written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, explores Monroe "at the height of her fame," with Ellen Burstyn appearing as "a version of Marilyn the world never had a chance to see."

Johnson, known for her roles in the "Fifty Shades of Grey" franchise and "Madame Web," is the daughter of actors Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. She previously collaborated with Gyllenhaal on the 2021 drama "The Lost Daughter."
The 17-minute film is described as a "love letter" to Monroe and is slated for its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September. This timing comes just three months after what would have been Monroe's 100th birthday.
"I've always been fascinated by Marilyn Monroe," Gyllenhaal stated. "So, when Genesis first came to me with the idea of a celebratory project for her centennial, I knew I wanted to work together on bringing this story to life."
Gyllenhaal, whose brother is actor Jake Gyllenhaal, added that "Flesh Impact" aims to present the iconic star through a "modern lens that reclaims her story." The director also shared that she initially had concerns about Johnson's resemblance to Monroe but dismissed them, stating, "Who cares? I don't know that anyone even really totally knows what Marilyn looks like because she's been so commodified and made into this myth and she's very blurry in my mind."
The short film's premise involves a mysterious older woman auditioning for a play in a New York City blackbox theater. As she recounts her qualifications and acting experience, hidden aspects of her identity and misconceptions about her life emerge.
"Flesh Impact" is presented by automotive brand Genesis and has received the endorsement of the Marilyn Monroe estate holders. Alongside the film's premiere, Ellen Burstyn is set to be honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival.
Burstyn, an Oscar winner for her role in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," has an extensive filmography including "The Exorcist," "Requiem for a Dream," and "Interstellar."
Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, became one of Hollywood's most enduring icons. Her notable films include "Niagara," "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," "The Seven Year Itch," and "Some Like It Hot." She passed away on August 4, 1962, at the age of 36, with her death ruled a probable suicide.
Other actresses who have portrayed Monroe on screen include Michelle Williams, Ana de Armas in the 2022 film "Blonde," and Mira Sorvino.
