Cristin Milioti won her first Emmy on Sunday, taking home Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her performance as Sofia Falcone in HBO’s The Penguin.
Milioti, whose career includes turns on How I Met Your Mother, 30 Rock and Black Mirror, delivered an emotional acceptance speech that mixed gratitude with exuberance. She acknowledged that she had written her remarks on the back of notes from therapy and thanked her family, costars, crew and HBO. Describing the role of Sofia — also known in the series as Sofia Gigante and The Hangman — she said, “Playing her felt like flying.” Milioti singled out showrunner Lauren LeFranc, saying, “Lauren LeFranc, whose brain I want to freebase,” and concluded by shouting, “I love you and I love acting so much!” as she fought back tears.
The win capped a night of recognition for Milioti, who has earned attention for a wide range of television work. She rose to mainstream prominence as the titular “Mother” on CBS’s How I Met Your Mother, played a notable comedy writer on 30 Rock, and delivered a critically praised turn as Nannette in the Black Mirror episode “USS Callister.” Her résumé also includes smaller parts, such as a guest appearance on The Sopranos.
Industry observers had flagged Milioti’s performance in The Penguin as an early frontrunner. Decider’s review of the series called her work “spectacular” and suggested she was a likely Emmy contender more than a year before the awards.
Despite Milioti’s victory, The Penguin captured relatively few major prizes on a night dominated by other limited series. Netflix’s Adolescence collected multiple top awards across categories, including major wins in acting and production, and emerged as a sweep in several circles.
Milioti’s reaction after leaving the stage was widely shared on social media. Entertainment journalist Courtney Howard posted video of the actor walking off the stage on X, underscoring the warm reception she received throughout the evening.
The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards featured a range of firsts and notable moments beyond the acting categories, reflecting a diverse slate of winners across broadcast and streaming platforms. Milioti’s win on Sunday added a long-sought personal milestone to a career that has moved between comedy and intense drama, and it marked a rare major award for The Penguin amid a fiercely competitive awards season.
