Coventry Market, known for its vibrant stalls and diverse produce, has been transformed into a unique television set for the new CBeebies series, "I Can Taste It." The show, produced by Leamington Spa-based company Common Story, aims to help children aged three to six develop confidence in trying new foods through sensory exploration.
The program features presenter Aaron Roach Bridgeman and puppet co-host Zesty, who guide young participants through various food-related activities. Producers chose Coventry Market for its authentic environment, variety of vendors, and strong sense of community, believing it offers a real-world setting for children to learn about food and where it comes from. "It's important that children see themselves represented in real places with real people," said Dom Sant, founder of Common Story.
Children participating in the show engage with unfamiliar foods using sight, smell, touch, sound, and taste. The series also introduces characters like Compost Monster, designed to promote sustainable food habits and reduce waste. Director Jess Matthews described the filming process as "glorious chaos," emphasizing that the production often adapts to the children's natural reactions rather than adhering to a strict script.
For some participants, like six-year-old Oscar from Bedworth, the experience has been exciting. His mother, Hannah, applied after seeing a social media advertisement, noting Oscar's enthusiastic personality. She also found a personal connection to the market, recalling childhood visits with her own mother.
Traders at Coventry Market have welcomed the production, viewing it as an opportunity to highlight a significant local landmark. Fishmonger Clive Miller believes the show will introduce children to a wider variety of foods, such as fresh fish, that they might not encounter in a typical supermarket setting. "It's a chance for them to learn about a wider variety of fish and where food comes from," Miller stated.
Common Story, which began with a modest budget, has produced over 100 programs for CBeebies and has more in production. "I Can Taste It" is scheduled to air in the spring of 2027.
