What began as a decision for one woman to use an anonymous sperm donor to start a family has evolved into an extraordinary love story, connecting her daughter to her biological father and ultimately, to her mother as well.
Jessica Share, now 50, and Aaron Long, 60, are a couple preparing to marry after meeting under highly unconventional circumstances: Aaron was the anonymous sperm donor Jessica used over a decade prior to conceive her daughter, Alice.
A Non-Traditional Path to Parenthood
In 2004, Jessica, then 28 and in a same-sex relationship with her partner Kelly, decided to become a mother. Concerned about potential custody claims from a known donor, she was adamant about using an anonymous donor. The available information at the time was limited, but Jessica and Kelly were drawn to one profile detailing a master's degree in creative writing, interests in music and sports, and brown, wavy hair. They chose this donor, spending over £1,500 and using 14 vials before Jessica became pregnant with Alice in 2005. Kelly later conceived their second daughter, Iris, using sperm from the same donor in 2007.
However, the couple's relationship ended when Alice was three and Iris was one. Jessica and Alice had no contact with Kelly or Iris after Kelly broke off contact and took Iris with her.
Discovering a Biological Connection
When Alice was 11, she requested a home DNA test for Christmas. In January 2017, the results revealed a surprising match: "Aaron Long: 50% [shared DNA]. Father." Jessica, initially shocked, began researching and quickly located Aaron Long on LinkedIn, discovering he lived only five hours away in Oregon. His Facebook profile, including childhood photos, solidified the connection; Jessica saw a resemblance to her daughter.
Jessica reached out to Aaron through the DNA testing website, explaining the match and offering to exchange photos. Aaron, who had donated sperm anonymously at age 28 as a way to supplement his income after graduating and teaching abroad, had no idea if he had any children. He had taken a DNA test in 2016 out of curiosity and to potentially connect with any offspring.
"I went from having no children to one child to five in the space of just a few minutes," Aaron later recalled, after also connecting with other biological children.
From Donor to Partner
As Jessica and Aaron exchanged messages, they discovered shared interests and a growing connection. Jessica, who had begun dating men as well as women after her previous relationship ended, was hesitant to pursue anything romantic, wanting to protect Alice's relationship with her biological father.
Four months after they began messaging, Aaron invited Jessica and Alice to meet some of his other biological children, who were gathering for a documentary about his experience as a sperm donor. Jessica was nervous but intrigued to meet him in person.
During the filming, Aaron entered the room where Alice was chatting with her new half-siblings. Jessica observed the moment from behind the camera crew. After filming, Aaron and Jessica hugged, a moment described as feeling like they had known each other forever.
That evening, during a party celebrating Aaron's biological children, Jessica observed his close relationships with his friends, further deepening her trust in him. A subsequent walk and conversation led to Aaron asking Jessica if she would be interested in living in an apartment in his building. She agreed, and a few weeks later, they shared their first kiss. Alice, then 17, reacted with a teenage eye-roll and left the room, indicating her acceptance of the developing relationship.
A Blended Family and Future Plans
Aaron estimates he has fathered over 60 children through sperm donation, though he is currently in regular contact with 22 and maintains occasional connections with more. He has never regretted his decision to donate, stating, "It’s brought so many wonderful people into my life. But it’s also shown me that family is so much more than DNA."
Jessica and Aaron moved in together in 2019 and are now happily settled, with plans to marry. Alice, now 21, has graduated from university and has a strong relationship with Aaron, whom she considers a father figure. Jessica reflects that while she doesn't always remember the unconventional way Aaron entered their lives, she is forever grateful for the choice she made over a decade ago.
