Commando, the world's longest-running war comic, is releasing its 6,000th issue this month, continuing a tradition that began in July 1961. The Dundee-based publisher DC Thomson produces eight issues monthly, with half being new stories and half reprints.

The pocket-sized comic, known for its action-packed wartime narratives, has maintained its format for over 65 years. Each 64-page issue features a story illustrated with 135 black and white images.

While many stories are set during the World Wars, recent issues have incorporated more contemporary conflicts such as the Falklands, Vietnam, and the Gulf War, alongside some science fiction narratives.

The 6,000th issue, titled "Sweet Revenge," is a collaboration between comedian Al Murray, a noted World War II enthusiast, and military historian James Holland. The story focuses on a British veteran of the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation who returns to France and is deployed to Normandy on D-Day via glider. This landmark issue is scheduled for release on September 21.
